World Outreach Worship
Center, formerly Denbigh Church of God, was set forth
on January 4, 1974, from a nucleus of Denbigh residents
who were members of the Parkview Church of God. We
started with twenty-three members, nineteen of whom
transferred from the Parkview Church of God. Four new
members were received in our first Sunday night service.
Rev. Bob Collins was the founding pastor. The church
met initially in the Community Center of Denbigh Courthouse
on Old Courthouse Way. Sunday School averaged 38 the
first month, and grew until, nine months later, the
peak attendance was 141. Plans were made to build on
a six-acre plot across from Riverside Regional Convalescent
Center.
|
For the first few
months, Wednesday night services were conducted in
the homes of the pastor and the clerk, Winston Clinedinst.
By September 1974, Pastor Collins had added an addition
to his house so that the entire congregation could
meet in one location. The Wednesday night attendance
grew steadily to a record of 107 by the time that the
move into our first church facilities took place.
|
A ground breaking
ceremony was held on April 4, 1976; in March 1977,
the congregation moved into the new facilities. On
May 15, 1977 the dedication service for the new church
was held. The Lord continued to bless this wonderful,
progressive congregation. (Presently, the average Morning
Worship attendance exceeds 1500. Family Training Hour
on Wednesday nights averages 650 people in a variety
of classes.) Quite a number of our church congregation
comes from Ft. Eustis Army Post, Langley Air Force
Base, Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown Coast
Guard Station, as well as other military bases. Through
these families, and God’s direction, our church
has reached into many foreign lands.

The Denbigh Church
of God offered many opportunities for ministry, both
inside and outside the structure of the church. In
the Fall of 1977, Denbigh Christian Academy was started
with 12 children in a Day Care/Kindergarten combination.
The vision was to offer the community Christian training
and care for their children. The program grew until
a new facility, Denbigh Christian Academy and Family
Life Center, was constructed in 1985. This building
was expanded in 1987, and now houses the Kindergarten
and Elementary Grades.
|
In 1993 the ground breaking
took place for a much needed sanctuary and classroom
facility. In October 1994, the congregation moved into
the new facility designed for worship and education.
The blessings of the Lord were continually evident
upon the congregation. From 1994 to 1998 the congregation
doubled from 600 in attendance to over 1200. Additional
staff was added also during this time that contributed
greatly to the growth and different ministries.
|
The Youth and Young
Adult Departments needed space because they were growing
also, so we began the process of purchasing the Brunk
Building located on 12.4 acres at 525 Industrial Park
Drive in Newport News, VA in 2001. The building, in
part, was renovated for use by both these departments.
The name for this location is now "The WOW COMMUNITY
CENTER." It is used for many activities, concerts,
training and discipleship classes.
